The 10 best mobile games you can play for free - and number 1 will surprise you

There are plenty of games out there available for free, ads and microtransactions notwithstanding Fallout Shelter -Credit:Bethesda

We kick off our list with a spin-off of the hugely successful Fallout series from Bethesda.

The console and PC version of this sees you roaming the post-nuclear wasteland in an open world, battling enemies, solving mysteries, and getting involved in the post-nuclear power struggles.

In the mobile version, launched in 2015, you occupy a slightly smaller world, instead building up your very own vault and the survivors inside.

This might involve defending the vault from attackers and repopulating the world outside.

To upgrade you have to send people out on missions, as well as customising the characters. The game also contains microtransactions.

Fortnite

Fortnite -Credit:Epic Games After beginning as a co-op survival type game, Fortnite has since become widely known as a battle royale where 100 players are all dropped on an island, and one person must become the last standing.

ADVERTISEMENT This game is now available to download, though if you are playing on an iPhone or iPad you will need to download the Epic Games app in order to play.

If you are playing on an Android device then you can download the game directly as an app.

Woodoku

Woodoku -Credit:Getty This is a puzzle game which falls somewhere in between Tetris and Sudoku.

The game involves placing different shapes into a grid. You have three pieces that you have to somehow make fit into the space that’s left on the board.

You score points by filling a square, or a row which will allow you to clear blocks from the board to make space for the next lot.

Once you run out of space and can’t fit any more pieces on, it’s game over.

It’s a relatively simple game which could nonetheless easily become a new obsession.

Genshin Impact

ADVERTISEMENT The game includes a large world which players can explore, filled with resources and treasure.

There are of course also dangers in the world including monsters and dungeons.

This game has a lot of microtransactions, which can easily start to add up. However if you want to avoid these you will have to spend more time grinding in order to level up.

Pokemon Go

It even wormed its way into the highest level of mainstream politics in the US with presidential candidate Hilary Clinton’s excruciatingly cringe “Pokemon go to the polls” comment in the 2016 US presidential election.

In the game you move around the real world, pointing your phone to see a pokemon right in front of you which you can then capture and deploy in battles.

ADVERTISEMENT The game became hugely popular, combining elements of the old Gameboy pokemon games with the augmented reality.

Marvel Snap

Marvel Snap -Credit:Marvel This sees players taking on a deck of 12 cards which each represent a superhero or supervillain from Marvel.

You play against other human players, who you have to defeat by placing cards at locations from the Marvel Universe.

It’s a game with simple rules, but one which is difficult to take to the next level.

Candy Crush Saga

Candy Crush Saga -Credit:King The game is one of the biggest mobile games out there, and has taken its simple tile-matching premise to an addictive conclusion.

You simply have to destroy various sweets including jellies, jellybeans, and marshmallows by matching them up into combos with each other.

Big combos of course mean bigger points, and you only have limited moves.

This combined with lots of bright colours, sound effects, and vibrations make for an addictive combination.

There are also many microtransactions in the game such as extra lives and powerups, but you can still enjoy the game without this.

Data Wing

At its core Data Wing is a racing game where you have to take data to a location as quickly as you can, all while beating other racers, finding keys, and avoiding any obstacles in your way.

It’s a simple enough premise which contains some surprising and satisfying powerups such as the wall-boosting mechanic, as a bigger story than you would expect from a game like this.

There are also zero microtransactions or pop ups.

Rocket League Sideswipe

Rocket League Sideswipe -Credit:Epic Rocket League made a huge impression on consoles with its simple but brilliant premise of cars playing football in giant boxed-in arenas.

In this version you can still play the same game just in a mobile version, whizzing down the pitch to score an explosive goal or pull off a last-second save.

There are also still the options for customising your vehicle and trying out some of the other ways to play.

Vampire Survivors

Vampire Survivors -Credit:Apple Finally we come to former game of the year winner Vampire Survivors, our pick as the best.

This is a whole different genre of game, a bullet-hell type survivor where you have to go up against hordes of enemies.

But the difference is that there aren’t actually any attack commands in the game, instead you have to move around the map manually and avoid some monsters while the game attacks on your behalf.

There are also choices of powerups and attacks when you reach a new level and an in-game currency you can use on upgrades and new characters.
